Black Screen on Login After First Boot
We are currently tracking this issue: on macOS 15.5 users see a black screen on login after the first reboot. The problem seems to be related to skipping the Terms of Service dialog.
Overview of Issue
Starting with macOS 15.5 Sequoia, there is an issue where the user will see a black screen on first login if the Terms of Service dialog is skipped (with XCreds or just the standard Mac login window).
Cause of Issue
Skipping the Terms of Service for macOS results in the login failing and hanging on a black screen.
Workarounds
- Do not skip the Terms of Service pane in macOS Setup Assistant.
- Try rebooting and logging in again. If that does not work, try:
- Boot into recovery
- Open Disk Utility
- Select
datavolume on the left Mountwith user password- Close Disk Utility
- Open Terminal
- Run the following:
cd /Volumes
cd Macintosh\ HD/private/var/db
rm -f .AppleSetupTermsOfService
reboot
