Pass Tap for iPad

You are here:

We have been working on an iPad app for authenticating users to apps and websites using RFID cards and tags. If your organization uses iPads in retail, institutional, or manufacturing settings, this system can help make authentication much faster and easier for your staff.

Handoff and Authenticate

If iPads are passed between staff members and you want them to authenticate with their own credentials, this system makes it easy for staff with an RFID badge or tag to tap to authenticate when the iPad is handed to them.

Authenticate in Place

If your staff use an iPad mounted in a stationary location, they can easily authenticate by tapping their RFID badge or tag. When done using the iPad, they log out, and the device is ready for the next staff member.

How it works

The system consists of 3 components:

  1. Pass Tap app for iPad – Available from the App Store, VPP, or TestFlight.
  2. CCID card reader – Available from Twocanoes or can be purchased separately.
  3. RFID card or tag – Available from Twocanoes or can be purchased separately. Works with most RFID cards and tags.

The iPad app is provisioned ahead of time with users who are associated with their RFID card or tag. The app currently provides options to provision the users individually or by importing a file. Each user has a username, password, and card ID associated with them. When the user is prompted for authentication in any app or web browser, they use AutoFill to activate the AutoFill extension. The AutoFill extension prompts the user to tap their card and then fills in the associated user information for the authentication being requested.

Once the user has completed their session, they log out and the device is ready for the next user.

Works with Any Identity Provider or Authentication System

Since the system depends on AutoFill, if the user can authenticate manually, it will work with our AutoFill extension. If an identity provider such as Entra is used, a single sign-on is typically all that is required to access all associated apps and websites.

Optimized for Speed

Typing a username and password on the virtual keyboard slows down authentication and slows down your business transactions. With the Pass Tap app, the process is quick and easy.

Verified Readers

The following readers have been validated to work with the system.

App from Test Flight

The Pass Tap app can be downloaded and installed on the iPad via TestFlight. Follow the instructions to install the app:

  1. Find the TestFlight app on the App Store and install it on the iPad.
  2. On the iPad, click on the TestFlight link below:
    https://testflight.apple.com/join/Scgedup7
  3. Accept the beta and install the app.

App Setup

To set up users on the iPad, follow the steps below:

  1. Launch the app on the iPad.

  2. Plug in the card reader and verify that the reader name shows up in the app.
  3. Tap an RFID card or tag on the reader and verify the UID shows up in the app.
  4. Add a user by tapping the Add User button.
  5. Tap the user’s RFID card to read the card ID.
  6. Add in the user’s username, password, password verification and tap Save.
  7. The user will now show up in the list of users.
  8. Tap the card and verify both the card ID and the user show up.
  9. To import multiple users, create a CSV file with the header line of
    uid,email,password
and the users’ information below the header line. For example:
    uid,email,password
    b2ad1835,freddy@twocanoes.com,password123

    044500d2cb7a84,barney@twocanoes.com,password456
  10. Save the file and AirDrop it to the iPad. Note that to prevent the file from being opened by the iPad Notes app, give the file name an extension such as .xyz. Then find the received file in the iPad Files app, then rename the file to change its extension to .csv.
  11. In the Pass Tap app, select Import Users.
  12. Select the CSV file.
  13. Open the Settings app and go to General > AutoFill & Passwords. In the AutoFill section, enable the Pass Tap app and disable the Passwords app.

  14. To authenticate, open an app or web page that requires authentication. Tap the username text field and tap Passwords in the autocomplete bar.
  15. Tap the RFID tag to have the username and password be entered.
