XCreds on iPad

The options for authenticating with a cloud provider to get access to an iPad are very similar to what you get on macOS with XCreds. We are working on bringing the cloud login experience on iPad. Below is a video and written demonstration on how this works.

How It Works

  1. iPad is enrolled in MDM with Automatic Device Enrollment. This is required for putting the iPad into Autonomous Single App Mode. Autonomous Single App Mode means the MDM puts the app in Single App mode, but the app itself can exit Single App Mode. The user cannot exit the app or access other iPad features, such as Control Center.
  2. The app shows a web view to authenticate the user using their OIDC credentials.
  3. On successful authentication, the tokens are verified, and if successful, the app allows the user to exit Single App Mode.
  4. When the user is done with the session, they open the app again, and the app enters Single App Mode.
  5. If the user does not go back into the app after they are done with their session, the iPad and its tools will remain unlocked for anyone to use.
  6. If the iPad is restarted when it is locked in Single App Mode, it restarts in Single App Mode (LoginWindow). If the iPad is restarted when a user is logged in, it will not be in Single App Mode when the iPad starts back up, continuing the session with the last user that logged in.

Key Takeaways

User tracking and device security will only be effective if the user opens the LoginWindow app before turning off the device. The login window cannot be bypassed by shutting down or restarting the iPad, the only way to bypass it is logging in with approved user credentials.

The XCreds Login app can be downloaded and installed on the iPad via TestFlight. Follow the instructions to install the app:

  1. Find the TestFlight app on the App Store and install it on the iPad.
  2. On the iPad, click on the TestFlight link below:

  3. Accept the beta and install the app.
